Key Steps in the Technical Translation ProcessClick the diagram below to download as PDF Handling industry and client specific terminology – the glossary of termsWe take time to select the right translator with the specialist knowledge of the industry and its respective terminology. In addition, the client may have their own specific terminology which needs to be applied in the translations. All existing content and reference material is reviewed in detail to create a glossary to ensure that all client-preferred terminology is used. This is covered in the first phase of the project which involves development of a comprehensive glossary of terms and sample translation which is reviewed by the client before commencing the translations. A glossary of terms is a database containing pairs of words or expressions (terms) in multiple languages. Term bases are used to maintain translation consistency and to develop customer specific terminology. A term base usually contains words and expressions that should be translated in a specific way in a particular translation project. A term base is much more than a source of helpful information. It forms part of the translation instructions, especially in translation projects where multiple translators are involved. If an expression is included in a term base, the translator is expected or even required to use this term, and failure to adhere to this will generate a warning message.
