The client

Quality is extremely important when it comes to Umbro’s sportswear.  So when the company decided to translate and localise their website into Dutch and Belgian-French recently, it’s no surprise they wanted a top translation firm that could cater to their needs.

The task

Umbro was always looking for more than straightforward translation.  To really convey their message to global consumers, they needed to translate not only the words but also localise the style and tone of their content to fit with each country.

In addition to that, they had two very different styles of content that required translation – marketing and legal text – so a company with specialist translators to deliver top quality results was essential.

Having worked previously for Umbro on a number of print projects, Comtec was the obvious choice.  With extensive experience providing translation services to the fashion sector, working with brands such as La Redoute, Joules and Triumph, they set to work on the project.

Comtec's Solution

Choosing two translators per language, one with specialist marketing knowledge of the clothing sector, the other with legal translation expertise, Comtec first created an agreed glossary of terms for the translators to work from.  They then worked closely with Umbro’s teams, sending sample translated text for review and approval, to ensure expert localisation within a short timeframe.

It was Comtec’s close working relationship with Umbro that proved key to the project’s overall success, according to Project Manager Susan Lankfer.  Having worked together previously, Umbro trusted Comtec to deliver quality translations that met their business objective of boosting brand awareness and sales overseas.
